US Bans Canadian Dairy, Alcohol and Vehicle Imports Starting Sept. 29

The US said it will ban Canadian dairy products, most alcoholic beverages and motor vehicles starting September 29, the Financial Times and Investing.com reported. The announcement came a day after Ottawa imposed US$20 billion in retaliatory tariffs on US goods, escalating a trade dispute between the two countries. The ban covers three sectors that rely heavily on cross-border trade between the US and Canada, one of the largest US trading partners. Canadian dairy farmers, brewers and distillers, and auto exporters now face the loss of US market access at the end of the month unless the two governments reach a resolution before then. It is not yet clear how Canada will respond beyond its existing tariff package, or whether either side will negotiate before the September 29 deadline. The scope of the US ban and any exemptions for existing contracts have not been detailed in the reporting so far.
